PERSONAL LORE: HOW ART GIGS FOUND ME

My work as an Illustrator is something that has grown out of the simple joy of seeking out opportunities to draw when art is needed. I see it as a service of visual articulation. Whether it’s a means of expression, communication, elaboration, love or so on. The ways that it can look are really boundless and limited only by imagination.

The first time I made art for money was over a decade ago now back in 2013. It began for me slow and lighthearted, with loving personal things like portraits and projects for friends and flyers for gigs, parties and community things. I relished in the gifts of getting to transcribe wishes and whims into something precious to adorn the work, lives and bedroom walls of those around me. With time I got familiar with the rituals of contributing in this way. I became a go to for posters and fliers for all kinds of gatherings, diy organizing, workshops and punk shows. Gradually, that expanded into more opportunities as I situated myself as an Artist within my greater communities and the worlds that orbited them.

As the years have gone by I’ve found my way into Illustration in so many forms; magazine articles, book covers, album art, logos, campaigns, promotion, print and clothing design, collaborations and contributions to zines and publications and more. I find myself endlessly curious to expand on this list and constantly inspired by the visions of others that may call on me.

Currently Illustration has become a form of occasional work that supports my livelihood, kindled by the love that brought me to it. When people reach out to me to commission artwork, we communicate throughout the process on finding fixed or hourly rates that we determine together referencing the framework I provide. I will always do my best to approach your inquiries with a thorough and honest assessment, and always hold the liberty to turn down what I can’t or don’t feel able to do.

THINGS I GET HIRED FOR

SHIRT DESIGNS

Some recent shirt designs I’ve done include a shirt design for a new business called LESS PAIN MORE GAINS that supports people with Fibromyalgia and other types of chronic pain self manage through exercise! And a long sleeved shirt design for a queer hair salon in East Vancouver called Big Joy. I’ve done many over the years for orgs, bands and special projects.

GIG POSTERS

I love drawing posters for events! If you read the lore above you know doing this was a big part of what got me started as an artist for hire. Some memorable event posters to me were for Tiny Tiny Cozy Festival on Mayne Island and a tour poster for grindcore band HIRS ‘Trans Girls Gone Wild,’ tour. I hope you think of me next time you find yourself organizing a big event.

MAGAZINE ILLUSTRATIONS

Drawing for magazines is always a thrilling experience! I’ve had artist features in the Capilano Review, Broken Pencil and Sad Mag. I often will illustrate for articles and have done this for This Mag, Aspargus Magazine and Sad Magazine. I frequently contribute to Zine Compilations both as an illustrator and author, most recent being the Covid Logs. Many of my zines are also published with Sheer Spite Press.

BUSINESS LOGOS

From time to time people ask me to make them logos and things like stickers and business cards. It’s never anything short of an honour to be invited into projects like this. I have fond memories of doing things like an illustration for a labour contractor,  a silk spider design for a seamstress, stickers and a logo for a tea company and hand drawn flyers advertising work for hairstylists and a tarot reader.

PORTRAITS

I’ve had the pleasure of being commissioned to make artwork as gifts many times. One of the most popular choices for this is people and pet portraits. Popular preference tends to lean towards traditional mediums like pen and ink drawings or watercolour paintings; but digital art is a popular choice as well. Drawing other people, from life and imagination has been my longest focus as artistic subject matter. There’s something so special about articulating the essence of someone through art.

ALBUM ART

As someone who spent an era of their life active in “Canadian’ and PNW music scenes, making artwork for music endevours has played a large part in growing me as an Illustrator! People often have hired me to draw special fonts for their band logos as well. Some bands and artists I’ve done art for include Rae Spoon, Pigeon Pit, Brocrusher, HIRS, Ophelia Tapes, Anti-Vibes, Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead and Anti-Vibes.
